The Power of One Solution

This is the third of a four-part blog series by Alice Brewer, Clinical Affairs Director for Tru-D SmartUVC.

Ensuring a safe environment for patients is a critical role shared by Infection Prevention (IP), Environmental Services (ES) and clinical staff. Similarly, disinfection of surfaces needs to be approached on multiple levels.

Research has shown that manual cleaning only sufficiently disinfects about 50% of surfaces, leaving a lot behind to infect subsequent patients. Adding UV to manual cleaning processes significantly reduces this risk, providing the cleanest and safest possible environment for patients.

The first randomized clinical trial to evaluate UV utilized Tru-D and validated the idea that advanced terminal disinfection leads to a safer patient environment. This CDC-funded study, the BETR-D study, found that the addition of Tru-D to standard cleaning strategies reduced the risk of acquisition of four major superbugs by a cumulative 30% among patients admitted to the same room. This not only provides better care for patients, but it can also lead to significant cost savings to hospitals.

The University of Wisconsin recently reported a 52% reduction in hospital onset C. difficile after adding Tru-D to their prevention bundle.  This demonstrates that Tru-D is an effective adjunct to good manual cleaning and comprehensive interventions aimed at reducing C. difficile.

Tru-D doesn’t replace all the good work that IP and ES are already doing in the name of patient safety. It works as a part of a comprehensive bundle including manual cleaning, good hand hygiene practices and effective communication between IP, ES and clinical staff. Just like a comprehensive bundle approach strengthens a hospital’s infection prevention efforts, Tru-D creates a comprehensive program for each of our hospitals, tailored to your specific needs and concerns. You get a multi-disciplinary team to help you with everything from protocol development to training, to clinical and financial justification for use of Tru-D.

Tru-D aims to provide you with one solution for your terminal disinfection needs and will work with you to achieve your HAI reduction goals.
